 I work as a Vet Assistant / Cat Nurse

At a local "NO KILL"  animal shelter & also at a local Veterinary Hospital

I also run Heavens Safe Haven Cat Rescue out of my home, with the help of my husband.

I decided that I should share my "Cat Tips"

with others, so that they could quickly & easily diagnose

 & treat their own pets for minor problems

 that could lead to bigger problems down the road, 

if not caught early enough.

 Not to mention save money on Vet bills! 

You see many people own or care for pets but most of us dont have the money to run to a vet everytime something seems wrong with an animal,

so I decided to help those animal lovers out with this info here

 so that many can treat their pets for a minimal cost,

"Common Ailments Common Cures"

Ear Mites, Body Mites, Heart Worms, Round Worms

One thing cures all of these: Ivermectin

200 Micrograms placed between the shoulder blades of a cat

WILL WORK! You are simply applying it the same as you would frontline spot on or any other spot on flea product!
Cats can have up to 400 mcg BUT ...........
 it only takes 200 mcg to kill ANY of these ailments listed here.
200 mcg is not by the cats weight amounts, large or small adult cats get the same amount of ivermectin.
DO NOT EVER GIVE A CAT more then 400 mcg of ivermectin for ANY reason.
Ivermectin is a clear liquid it looks like water, you can usally buy it from any feed store in your area.
To use ivermectin on an adult cat first you will need some syringes (NO NEEDLES)
You can buy 3cc syringes that are easily marked with a big M on them if you fill the syringe with ivermectin only to the M on the syringe it will be the correct amount for dosing with ivermectin rather then counting tiny lines on a syringe. Trust me this is much easier!

Directions: Take a 3cc Syringe fill it up to the big M on the syringe & squirt it between a cats shoulder blades.
(NO NEEDLE ATTACHED TO SYRINGE IS USED) Its much easier to measure out when a syringe is already marked so that is why I only use the syringes with a big M on them rather then trying to count tiny lines on the syringe for accuracy.

If for some reason  you cant find the 3cc syringes with the big M on them then just fill the syringe up by counting the 3 small lines from the tip of the syringe, look at the tip then count upward 123 lines as you draw the medication.

This is a tiny amount very tiny, it equals to 200 mcg.

Adult Dosage: 200mcg

Kittens Dosage: Do Not use on Kittens unless they are atleast 4wks old,

this is because of the blood brain barrier in kittens.

To kill feline scabies on a kitten just spray Frontline on kitten and massage into hair.

Frontline spray is safe on kittens just 2 days old.

USE CAUTION: Only lightly spray a small kitten!

Ivermectin will kill all ear mites, &

(Body Mites = Notoedric Cati Mites also known as Feline Scabies)

Please Note: a 3cc Syringe is the same as a 3ml syringe.

If you are trying to cure heart worms, round worms, & ear mites

treat your cat with Ivermectin Once a month.

If you are trying to cure Feline Scabies treat cat once a week for 4 weeks.

Ivermectin also cures whip worms!!!

However, it will not cure Tape Worms!

Also Note: Cats do not need heartworm tests to be treated for heartworms!

Heart Worm tests usually produce a false negative in cats!

Upper Respiratory, Colds, Sinus, broad spectrum infections

For Upper Respiratory or a URI cats need a decongestant just like humans do,

there are a couple of things you can do to unclog your cats noses & chest.

Decongestant: Give cat 1/4 of a pill twice a day of

Chlorpheniramine 4mg tablets, This is a Antihistamine.  

Dosage for large cats: 1/2 a tablet twice a day.

These tablets we call a 1/4 yellow here at the shelter, but they work great!

Also if you dont like the idea of pilling a cat you can also use 4 way nasal spray, just give the cat a squirt in both nostrils twice a day.

Also, you can take an insulin 1cc syringe and fill it up with warm salt water, place tiny drops in cats nose twice a day.

This will clear a sinus problem FAST! Note: When the cat sneezes out blood from the nose this is normal and a sign that the sinus infection is clearing up, so dont panic if you see blood in your cats nose after they sneeze.

You will also need some broad spectrum antibiotics

for your cat if your cats nasal or chest problems turn into a URI

(Upper Respiratory Infection)

The most widely used is Clavamox, you can buy this here: 1 Drug

1drug.com sells clavamox in the pill form & the liquid form.

When you enter their site just click on PET MEDS or type in Clavamox in their search box.

Dosage: liquid form using a 3cc syringe draw up 1cc of liquid clavamox, give twice a day for a 5-10 lb cat

for a kitten 1/2 a cc of clavamox twice a day.

Dosage: Pill form: cut in half one clavamox 125mg tablet, then give 1/2 of that to an adult cat twice a day.

So you will be giving your cat 62.5mg by cutting this pill in half & giving it twice a day.

Note: Do not give kittens the pill form of clavamox give only the liquid form to kittens.

This is because kittens have problems swallowing pills, so the liquid is much easier for a kitten.

Clavamox is the very best broad spectrum antibiotic around!

It can be used to cure just about any type of infection in a cat or dog.

Fleas, Flea Eggs. Also Eyes & Ear Problems

For Fleas For your CAT buy the Advandage 100 for extra large dogs

YES I said for DOGS, the ingredients are the same for BOTH dogs & cats.

Take a 1cc insulin syringe and fill it up with advantage to 0.4

Then squirt in the middle of the cats shoulder blades once a month.

The ingredients are the same for dogs & cats so buying the advantage 100 for dogs is just simply giving you more for your money.

Dosage: For cats 5 - 10 lbs 0.4 from a 1cc syringe. For cats over 10 lbs 0.8 from a 1cc syringe.

Advantage will also kill flea dermatitis & flea eggs and of course live fleas!

Also if you have multiple cats and your home is over run with fleas you will not need to fog your home or anything else just put all cats on the advantage and the fleas in the entire home will die!

Ear Problems:

Directions for use:

On the Felix Paste Allwormer

there are large black lines down the tube,

simply squeeze into cats mouth down

 to the first line on the tube then stop.

To do another cat, squeeze medication from the line you left off at

down to the very next line then stop.

You have now dosed two cats correctly!

Its really that easy!  This is the dosage for adult cats only,

kittens get 1/2 of an adult dose.

Dose kittens at 1 month old but not before than!

Deworm cats every 3 months.
